What Causes Tooth Enamel Damage?
Another cause of tooth enamel damage is bruxism -- or teeth-grinding. Over
time, the constant clenching and friction can wear down or fracture the enamel.
In this slide, teeth grinding has ground down the upper and lower front teeth. Bruxism is
often worst when you sleep -- that's when you can't control it. Reducing stress
may help. Some people wear a special mouth guard to bed. Above

Opening bottle caps or plastic packaging with
your teeth may be convenient, but this is one habit that makes dentists cringe.
Using your teeth as tools can cause them to crack or chip. Instead, keep
scissors and bottle openers handy. Bottom line, your teeth should only be used
for eating. Above article from:

It’s never too early to protect teeth. Giving a
baby a bedtime bottle of juice, milk, or formula, can put new teeth on a path
to decay. The baby may become used to falling asleep with the bottle in his or
her mouth, bathing the teeth in sugars overnight. It's best to keep bottles out
of the crib.

The Metal Is Gone Many
patients are familiar with the silver-mercury amalgam
filling, which has been the standard restoration
material for years. It does not bond well to teeth, so
eventually bacteria will set in and decay can grow under
the filling. Patients do not like the appearance of this
dark filling that contrasts with the natural shade of
their teeth. Today, we use only composite resin fillings
that bond tightly to teeth and can be matched to the
shade of your real tooth to give you a long-lasting,
natural-looking restoration.
Just because cough drops are sold in the medicine aisle
doesn't mean they’re healthy. Most are loaded with sugar. So after soothing
your throat with a lozenge, be sure to brush well. Whether the sugar comes from
a cough drop or a hard candy, it reacts with the sticky plaque that coats your
teeth. Then bacteria in the plaque convert the sugar into an acid that eats
away at tooth enamel. Hello, cavities.
Earning
Trust – One Patient at a Time
Gum disease, not decay, is the main reason for tooth
loss. Often, it goes unnoticed until it is at the point
of losing your teeth. The symptoms are gums that bleed
when brushing or flossing and loose teeth. It is
possible to reverse gum infections without surgery, if
the infection is taken care of before it reaches an
advanced stage.
Gum Disease Linked to
Serious Health Concerns
Periodontal disease is a serious matter that should not
be taken lightly. Medical research has confirmed that
infected gums contribute to life-threatening health
problems of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. What is
even more astounding is the estimation by the American
Dental Association that 8 out of 10 adults have gum
disease. Most dentists consider this to be at an
epidemic level. Now that research has confirmed that the
bacteria from infected gums travels throughout the
bloodstream to vital organs, it is more serious than
losing your teeth.
The American Academy of Periodontology reports: “studies
found periodontal infection may contribute to the
development of heart disease, increase the risk of
premature, underweight births, and pose a serious threat
to people whose health is already compromised due to
diabetes and respiratory diseases.”
Good
News in Treating Gum Disease
If periodontal disease is in the advanced stages,
treatment will be surgery. It is mostly successful in
halting the problem, and most dental insurance plans
cover this procedure. But with milder cases of gum
infections, today we can offer our patients nonsurgical
treatments. Together with good dental hygiene, they can
stop the spread of the infection and return the gums to
a healthy state. Most of the nonsurgical methods are
also covered by dental insurance plans.
What’s So Bad about Missing
a Tooth?
Teeth can be lost because of accident or injury, but the
most frequent reason for missing teeth is gum disease.
It is important to realize that missing even one tooth
can be the start of other teeth moving. This is not good
as it can affect proper chewing and the absorption of
nutrients from food. It can become too difficult to chew
more natural foods, so softer, processed foods may be
favored, which can lead to weight gain. Missing teeth
will eventually affect your facial appearance with a
sunken look, which makes you look older than your years.
We recommend implants to replace one or many teeth. They
are very natural looking and functional and even a
dentist can have a hard time telling the difference.
As we get older, our needs change to maintain healthy
teeth. Consuming caffeine drinks over the years results
in stained teeth; a build-up of plaque may be present;
taking medications may reduce the flow of saliva through
the mouth; fillings may need to be replaced. Having
regular check-ups will let us take care of these
problems in the early stages using modern techniques.
Gum disease is often a major problem with seniors and
can lead to serious health conditions. If your gums have
inflammation or start to bleed, or teeth become loose,
it is very important that you contact us immediately.
Comfortable
Dental Care with Sedation Dentistry
Many patients exhibit some level of anxiety about having
dental treatment. If this includes you, rest assured
that you are by no means alone. The anxiety you may feel
can be alleviated with a simple regimen of taking a
sedative given to you for the appointment. This is done
in coordination with someone providing transportation to
and from your dental appointments. This regimen is used
for patients who experience moderate to severe anxiety
or for longer appointments. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
can be administered for shorter appointments and do not
require anyone to transport you to and from the office
if you only experience mild to moderate anxiety
symptoms.
Please make sure to inform us of any concerns you have.
This will allow us to help you with a plan that will fit
your needs.
Replacements
for Missing Teeth
We offer dental implants that provide natural-looking
and functioning replacements for missing teeth. They
emerge from the gums, which gives them the appearance of
real teeth. They function well to allow chewing a
variety of foods and to give you a beautiful, solid
smile.
Implants can replace any number of teeth. People with no
teeth can benefit by replacing their dentures with
implants so they will no longer have to be worried or
embarrassed about slippage when they talk or eat. They
are permanently placed in the mouth and do not have to
be removed at night. Our office handles the entire
process, so there is no need for a referral to another
professional.
